As you go through life, you will inevitably deal with different aches and pains. Most of the time, the pain will subside without you ever having to seek help from a doctor. Sometimes, however, those small pains are warning you of a big problem that may be developing. Dental emergencies often start out as minor pain that you may not consider a big deal. If you or a loved one is experiencing dental pain, don’t ignore the signs. Seek treatment from Dr. Betts to relieve your pain and restore your healthy, attractive smile.
How do you know when you’re experiencing a dental emergency? Here are some guidelines to help you figure out if your pain is short-lived or an urgent situation requiring treatment at our Decatur, AL practice.
Pain Level – Typically, the worse the pain, the greater the chance that it is something serious. Dr. Betts will always be available to help his patients when they experience a dental emergency. If you are in pain, please call and let us help you figure out if it is an emergency or something you can schedule an appointment for to get taken care of soon.
Pressure – If you have pressure in your jaw or mouth, you could be developing a very serious condition called an abscess. If left untreated, this condition could be very dangerous for not just your teeth, but your entire mouth. Dr. Betts will determine if it is an abscess and, if so, help clear it from your mouth and get you out of pain.
Injury – Apply cold compresses right away to minimize swelling and bleeding. Apply pressure to the bleeding area if possible. If a tooth has been knocked out, rinse the tooth with water, but do not scrub or remove any attached bits of tissue. Put the tooth in a container with milk, saliva, or water. Contact our office right away and remember to bring the tooth when coming in.
